Baby Girl Born Without Skin



Last Saturday June 11, a baby girl in Nagpur, Maharashtra born with one of the rarest conditions that leaves her without any external skin as a result of a severe congenital disorder.


The condition, known as Harlequin Ichthyosis, is classed severe genetic skin disease. In such cases the child’s whole body is encased in an ‘armour’   of thick white plates, the layers are separated by deep cracks which will need constant treatment.

The baby was born to a 23-year old mother and a 27-year old farmer father in the City of Amravati in Central India’s Maharashtra State. The baby girl weighing 1.8kgs is being reported the first child of the recently married couple.


Delivered by caesarian, doctors at the Lata Mangeshkar Hospital said the tragic girl was born with almost no skin at all.

Dr. Yash Banait a pediatrician said the baby was born with the congenital disorder meaning the baby will need lifetime treatment to moisturize her outer body.
Banait said they were using coconut oil and petroleum jelly and giving the baby a special nutritional supplement.


“There is no skin on the body, so skin grafting is not a possibility,” But the baby hasn’t developed breathing issue maybe she have required to be kept on ventilation.”

“We will be undertaking a 2D Echo investigation to ascertain the cardiac deformities or anomalies, if any,” He added.

According to The Indian Express, the baby girl was born with two small holes on her nose, an inverted eyelid and no ears.

Dr. Yash Banait said: “There is no cure for this disorder. All the medical science can do is try to keep the baby alive.”
