CAUTION: WEARING SKINNY JEANS CAN LEAD TO PARALYSIS IN WOMAN, STUDY FINDS

Be careful, a recent study has found out that wearing skinny jeans can cause some serious problems, such as nerve damage in your lower legs.

A study which was published by the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, a team of doctors have told the cautionary tale of a 35 year old woman who end up paralyzed on the ground, unable to get up. This happened after she spent the whole day in skinny jeans, while helping her friend to move out.

This woman, who wished to stay anonymous, recalled that her jeans felt a bit tight when she pulled them on in the morning, said Thomas Kinder, of the Neurology Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia who lead the study. However, this incident happened after she spent hours in squatting position while emptying boxes and packing things. Then she noticed that her legs feel tight and uncomfortable.

When she was walking home later that evening the woman found that she could no longer move her feet properly, causing her to trip and fall. She spent several hours on the ground before she was discovered and brought to the hospital. The doctors saw that her both legs were so swollen below the knee, so they had to cut off the jeans off her. She was treated with intravenous fluids, and it took 4 days to use her legs normally again.

Kinder explained that the combination of the squatting and the tight jeans have caused this problem. He also added that prolonged squatting can lead to compression of the peroneal nerves, a set of nerves near the knee joint.  Squatting has also been shown to reduce blood supply to the calf muscles.

In this situation, the woman’s calf muscles responded to the lack of blood by swelling, but because she was wearing skinny jeans, the muscles swelled towards the inside, causing another set of nerves to be compressed and to cut off the supply to all the muscles. He also said that there are no previous reports of this kind of condition. The woman was treated with IV fluids, because the muscle damage has caused breakdown of muscle fibers, and it could have led to kidney damage if she wasn’t treated with IV hydration.

Kinder said that the lesson from study is that people should not squat for a long time, especially while wearing skinny jeans.

“If they experience leg discomfort or tingling while squatting they should stand up and walk around,” he said.

If you are doing a job that requires a lot of squatting, you should take the skinny jeans off and put on some loose pants instead.
