Kidney stones are one of the most common urinary tract disorders. They are hard, crystalline minerals that develop in the kidneys when urine becomes too concentrated. The stones can vary greatly in size and shape and occur most often in people 20-40 years old.
The primary functions of the kidneys’ is to cleanse the toxins, expel extra water and waste from the blood and release these substances through urination. From the kidneys, the urine goes through the bladder and finally outside of the body through the urethra. If the toxins are not dissolved and expelled they become little crystals that then for a stone.
The small stones are expelled from the body easily, but if the stones are larger, they cannot be expelled and they cause different symptoms since the urethra is blocked. Any size of a kidney stone that blocks the ureter, tube between the kidneys and the bladder, can cause severe pain.
Here are some of symptoms that everybody should know:
Kidney pain
If a kidney stone is stuck in one of the kidneys it can cause pain on the affected side of the abdomen. The pain is sudden and severe, and usually worsens. It is one of the worst pains that you can experience. You can also feel pain in the genitals, groin or back.
Renal colic
This pain can come and go or remain constant. The stone moves inside of the kidneys, and can cause sweating and sickness because of the extreme pains. Changing body position does not relieve the pain.
Blood in the urine.
If you have blood in your urine with stomach pain it’s a sign of kidney stones. The rubbing of the stone against the inside of your ureter can cause bleeding, shown by red or pink urine.
Infections
People with kidney stones often have a urinary tract infection with fever and pain while urinating.
Pain record
Try to analyze the time when the pain appears if you are not certain that you have kidney stones. Morning pains are common,if you do not urinate so often when sleeping at night.
Early symptoms of kidney stones
• Frequent and painful urination
One of the earliest and most common warning signs that you may have kidney stones is a sudden and unexplained increase in the frequency and urgency of urination. You will notice an intense need to urinate, even when you haven’t been drinking unusually large quantities of fluid.
• Nausea and vomiting
This symptom occurs because your body cannot expel the waste. The kidneys’ function is affected negatively and the body tries to eliminate the toxins through vomiting.
• Smelly, discolored and cloudy urine
Patients suffering from kidney stones will also notice that along with discoloration, urine also appears cloudy and may give off a pungent and foul odor. While it is normal for urine to give off a slightly bitter smell from time to time, there’s no mistaking or missing the kind of sharp stench that can occur if you have kidney stones. This odor occurs due to the presence of a heavy concentration of hard chemicals and toxins in the urine.
• Difficulty sitting and lying
Once the kidney stone reaches a larger size, it often becomes so aggravating that patients will find themselves unable to sit down or lay down for an extended period of time. This is because seated or laying-down positions put additional pressure on the affected area, intensifying the pain and pressure as the kidney stone comes in contact with a wider range of internal systems and structures. Standing up will be much easier.
If you have some of this signs and symptoms of kidney stones, consult a medical professional as fast as you can.
