Mouth ulcers also termed an aphthous ulcer are white small painful lesions surrounded by an inflamed red border that appears in the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. The most common causes of mouth ulcers are hormonal imbalance, herpes simflex infections, deficiency in nutrients, like iron, Vitamin C, VitaminB12 skin disease stress or tissue injury, and underlying disease conditions. Certain foods including citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables [such as lemon, orange, pineapples, apple figs, and strawberries] can trigger a mouth ulcer. Sometimes due to damage caused by biting the cheek or tongue, or by sharp teeth, braces, brushing or poorly fitting dentures.
There are 3 types of mouth ulcers.
- Minor ulcers the most common type and appear in 80% of the cases. Their healing usually needs 7 to 10 days.
- Major ulcers occur in 10% of the cases. They merge with adjacent ulcers and create a larger one, leading to great pain.
- Herpetiform ulcers are also extremely painful and result due to an infection with herpes simflex. In this case women are more prone and they frequently reoccur.
Mouth ulcers can be treated naturally, Below are the most effective home remedies.
- Gargle alternatively with a glass of warm water.
- Coconut milk is an excellent home remedy. You should extract the milk grating fresh coconut milk and gargle for 3 to 4 times daily.
- Aloe Vera provides efficient effects in mouth ulcer. You should take 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel 3 times daily.
- Prepare a salt water mouthwash by dissolving ½ teaspoon salt in 1 cup of water. Swish it for a half hour and spit it out.
- In a cup of water, add 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds and boil. Gargle while it is still a bit warm 3 to 4 times a day.
- Boil a cup fenugreek leaves in 2 cups of water. Strain , cover and gargle with 2 to 3 times a day.
- Chew 5 to 6 holy basil leaves and drink some water. Repeat this procedure 5 to 6 times daily.
- Mix ¼ teaspoon of turmeric and a teaspoon of honey to prepare a paste, and rub it on the painful area.
- Boil coriander leaves in water, allow the water to cool, and gargle lukewarm water 3 to 4 times a day.
- Eat raw tomatoes whenever you suffer from mouth ulcers, or you can gargle with tomato juice 3 to 4 times a day.
- Mix 7 parts of sugar candy and 1 part of camphor, apply their mixture on the blister. This will provide quick result’
- Mix a pinch of turmeric powder and a teaspoon of glycerin and rub it to affected area.
- Cranberry juice can be used to treat mouth ulcers, Just hold it in the mouth for some time.
- Use plain yogurt to treat mouth ulcers.
- Mix coconut oil and honey and massage the gums.
- Prepare a paste of Indian gooseberry and rub it on the affected area. Apply this 2 to 3 times daily.
- In order to soothe the redness and treat the inflammation , you should dab 2 drops pf tea tree oil directly on the affected area.
- In order to get free of the mouth ulcers, you should consume raw salads, rich in onions.
- Using bicarbonate soda can eliminate mouth ulcers.
- Prepare a homemade antiseptic mouthwash by mixing 10 drops of tea tree oil in 1/3 cup of water, and swish it for 30 seconds, and spit it out. This will treat the infection and alleviate the pain.
- Eat banana with curd on an empty stomach in the morning.
