Most of parents know the basics of keeping children healthy, like offering them healthy foods, making sure they get enough sleep and exercise,
At the same time , it is every parents duty to ensure good hygiene for his or her children. To prevent infections parents should teach their children to practice frequent handwashing, especially after using the bathroom and before eating. They should frequently wash toys , bedding , clothes and other personal things that their children use.
1 Honey for Common Colds.
Common cold is caused by tiny living thng called virus. Symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose scratchy throat, coughing, watery eyes, mild body aches and general feeling of ill.
Honey is a good remedy for common colds because it contains antioxidants , anti bacterial and anti- microbial that fights against the virus. Give it to your child 3 or 4 times for a few days.
Note: Do not give honey to children below 1 year old as it can cause infant botulism.
2. Olive Oil for Ear Infection.
Ear infections for children can be very uncomfortable. The pain can be sharp or dull that comes and goes or is constant. It is caused by a viral or bacterial infection that affects the middle ear. They can also be due to allergies or cold.
Olive Oil helps to decrease the irritation in the outer and inner ear to ease the pain.
Put 3 or 4 drops of warm olive oil into your child’s ear canal, by applying this the wax in the ear gets softer. Remove the infected wax with cotton-tipped swabs.
3. Asafoetida for Toothaches
A toothache is a pain in or around the tooth, the most common cause in children is tooth decay and cavities.
Asafoetida or Hng is very good for treating toothaches. To make a poultice for toothaches, make a paste of asafoetida and lemon juice in a mortar and pestle, apply it using cotton swab on the affected tooth of your child.
4. Ginger for Asthma
Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood It is a lung disease, the most common symptoms of asthma are coughing, difficulty of breathing, chest tightness, wheezing {a whistling or squeaky sound in your chest when breathing, especially when exhaling ] and shortness of breath. The condition can be triggered by air pollution, allergies , respiratory infections and a humid climate.
Ginger is wonderful herb used to treat asthma. Its anti –inflammatory property helps reduce airway inflammation and inhibit airway contraction. Mix together equal amounts of ginger juice, pomegranate juice and honey. Give your child 1 tablespoon 3 times a day. Ginger candies can also help ease the symptoms.
5. Turmeric for Cough
Cough is very common problem for children. Coughing is a response to a blockage or irritation in the throat or upper respiratory passages.
The anti- bacterial and anti-viral action of turmeric makes it a best remedy to treat cough; Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder in a cup of warm milk and give it to your child two times a day. For a dry cough, mix ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of honey and give it to your child 3 times daily.
6. Bananas for Diarhea
Diarrhea is a very common problem in children. It is a frequent loose, or watery bowel movements that often occurs with abdominal pain. Children get diarrhea due to virus infection , consumption of contaminated food or water, or food poisoning.
Banana contains potassium that helps replace electrolytes that may be lost during diarrhea. If your child does not want banana, make a smoothie with yogurt and banana.
7. Coconut for Minor Wounds
Most children get minor wounds while playing. When the outer skin layer becomes torn or punctured, it can produce bleeding , redness swelling , inflammation , pain and tenderness.
To treat a wound, you need to thoroughly clean it first. Use cool water under moderate pressure and a mild antiseptic soap to wash the wounded area for 10 to 15 minutes . This will help remoxe drt, dust and other particles.
Apply extra-virgin coconut oil on the wounded area and cover it with bandage . Reapply this remedy 2 or 3 times daily. The antibacterial, anti inflammatory, and moisturizing properties of coconut oil will promote healing and prevent infection.
8. Aloe Vera for Skin Rashes
Skin rashes cause redness, itchiness, and, at times, pain and inflammation. These rashes can be caused by allergies, excessive sweating , mites, and insect bites.
The soothing and calming properties of aloe vera help treat skin rashes in children, Apply some fresh aloe vera gel on the affected area, wait 20 minutes and then rinse it off with cool water. Reapply this remedy a few times daily.
9. Cinnamon for Bedwetting
Bedwetting is also known as nighttime incontinence or nocturnal enuresis., the process of unknowingly passing urine while sleeping, is common in young children.
It happens due to small bladder, excessive urine production , constipation or stress. It become less common as the child gets older.
Cinnamon is the best remedy for bedwetting . This spice keeps the body warm, which in turn helps prevent bedwetting.
10. Fennel for Stomach Pain
Almost all children suffer from stomach pain at one time another. There are many health problems that can cause stomach pain for children, including bowel problems-constipation, indigestion, gas , acid reflux, stomach flu, food poisoning, over eating, colic and swallowing air.
Fennel seeds contains anti-spasmodic , anti-bacterial , anti-microbial and anti- inflammatory properties that helps to stimulate the production of gas and gives quick relief from stomach problems. Add 1 teaspoon of crushed fennel seeds to 1 cup of hot water and steep for 10 minutes. Strain , add a honey and have your child drink it slowly 2 times daily. You can also give your child a small amount of roasted fennel seeds to chew after meal.
